Schedule:

• Weekly Sessions (Club Nights): Hendon Chess Club holds club nights most Thursdays from 7:30pm to 10pm. However, it is important to check their event calendar as these may be moved or skipped, particularly during summer and winter holiday periods.
• Venue: All regular club night activities take place at Cumberland Lawn Tennis Club, 25 Alvanley Gardens, London NW6 1JD.

Who can join:

• The club welcomes anyone who loves chess, regardless of age and level of play.
• Their membership includes individuals ranging from Master title holders to near-beginners, and spans across children and long-retired members.
• Juniors are encouraged to join their partner club, Barnet Knights, for a more tailored experience.
• Walk-in visitors are welcome to attend as social guests or spectators once or twice before deciding whether to become a member.

How much does it cost:

Membership fees vary depending on the season and activities. Members enjoy benefits such as discounted tournament entry fees, eligibility for league matches, and access to social chess events.

Competitive opportunities:

• Middlesex League: This is their main league competition, with several teams catering to all playing levels. Matches are played against other clubs (home and away) and are ECF-rated.
• FIDE-rated Blitz tournaments: normally held on the first Thursday of each month. 

• Annual Club Championship: An ECF-rated Swiss-style tournament usually played in the summer.
• Open Rapid tournaments: Organised occasionally.
• The club has historically participated in the London Online Chess League and may do so again in the future.
• Membership can make individuals eligible to play for Middlesex in the SCCU County Championship.

Mission of the school and the background (about the founders):

Founded in 1947, the club offers competitive and social chess opportunities for its members, aiming to be a friendly, successful, and inclusive community.

Alumni achievements:

• The club has won the Middlesex League nine times and been runners-up twice since 2009. Notable championship years include 2019-20 and 2009-2010.
• Recent news highlights include Jonathan Rubeck, a Hendon member, winning the March Blitz, and Hendon 3 achieving a notable victory. Ethan Sanitt also recently defeated an International Master in a league match, and club member Peter Hazell jointly won a FIDE Rapid tournament.
• The club boasts members with Master titles, and maintains a Roll of Honour.

Additional information:

While the club is named Hendon, its current venue is in a different location due to the challenges of finding a suitable and affordable space. The current venue unfortunately has limited disabled access.

Hendon Chess Club is affiliated with the English Chess Federation and the Middlesex County Chess Association.

The club is run by volunteers and welcomes new members who are willing to contribute their time and ideas.
