Richmond Junior Chess Club (RJCC) was founded in 1975 and welcomes budding chess masters of all abilities. Richmond Juniors has also a strong focus on girls’ chess, aiming to create a girl-friendly environment and providing separate training opportunities once a month with a top female chess player.

Club Profile

Weekly Sessions: 

RJCC runs weekly chess classes at Orleans Park School in Twickenham (Richmond Road, Twickenham, TW1 3BB) for Beginners, Novices, Intermediate, and Advanced students.

Sessions have historically been held on Saturday afternoons, but schedules may change. Be sure to check the “Our Classes” section on the RJCC website for the latest updates.

Who Can Join:  

The club is open to children aged 5 to 18. All standards are welcome, from absolute beginners to advanced players; all that is required is an interest in learning, improving, and playing chess.

How Much Does It Cost: 

The standard tariffs for classes are as follows:

  • Advanced or Intermediate Class – Term: £200.00
  • Beginners or Novices Class – Term: £125.00
  • Girls Class – Rate Per Session: £20.00
  • Sibling Discounts available (starting at £75 per term)

RJCC may offer discretionary reduced rates in certain circumstances, such as family financial difficulties, for longstanding members who cannot attend every session, or as prizes in tournaments

Competitive Opportunities: RJCC provides numerous opportunities for young players to compete:

  • Club Championship: Held every term for Intermediate and Advanced club members, with games rated by the English Chess Federation (ECF) for Rapidplay.
  • Annual Club Blitz Championship: Takes place at the end of the Summer Term.
  • Perpetual Trophies: Awarded annually in various age and gender categories.
  • EPSCA (English Primary Schools Chess Association) Inter-Association Championship: RJCC selects teams to compete in zonal and national finals for Under 9, Under 11, and Under 11 Girls. For participation in the EPSCA Inter-Association Championships, Richmond Juniors is responsible for selecting teams of primary school children who live or go to school in specific London Boroughs: Hammersmith & Fulham, Hounslow, Kensington & Chelsea, Merton, Richmond upon Thames, and Wandsworth. Additionally, players from contiguous unassociated boroughs (Ealing, Brent, City of Westminster, Lambeth, Croydon, and Sutton) are also free to play for Richmond Juniors. 

In some cases, players with “significant ties” to RJCC may also be eligible, even if they reside elsewhere, subject to the permission of other associations.

  • National Primary Schools Chess Championship (NPSCC): RJCC encourages schools they are active in to participate and also runs NPSCC zonal events.
  • LJCC (London Junior Chess Championship) Qualifiers: RJCC holds two annual qualification tournaments (Hampton and Twickenham) for the LJCC, a major annual junior event.
  • UKCC (Delancey UK Chess Challenge): RJCC has supported this national junior tournament for many years, previously running qualifying stages (Megafinal).
  • Twickenham Youth U14 & U18 Championship: A FIDE rated standard play event hosted by RJCC.
  • Girls are encouraged to participate in all events, RJCC competes in the EPSCA Girls U11 events.

Mission and Background: 

Founded in 1975, the club’s mission is to help young players reach their full potential, regardless of background or experience. The club has a long history of fostering young chess talent and has become a thriving hot-spot for development.

Alumni Achievements: 

Over the years, RJCC has helped many young players develop their skills, including a number who became titled players. Honoured alumni include:

  • Grandmasters: Demetrios Agnos, Luke McShane, Jonathan Rowson, Aaron Summerscale
  • International Masters: Richard Bates, Tom Hinks-Edwards, Callum Kilpatrick, Andrew Kinsman, Ali Mortazavi, Gavin Wall, Yang-Fan Zhou
  • Women’s International Master: Cathy Forbes
  • FIDE Master: Peter Sowray
  • Candidate Master: Mark Josse

  • RJCC runs annual Easter and Summer Holiday Camps with classes, tournaments, and analysis.
  • The club has a dedicated team of coaches with various qualifications and specialisations, catering to all levels and including coaches specifically for girls.
  • RJCC also runs chess clubs in a number of local schools.
